I watch all of the great British mystery series on television. What drew you to early twentieth-century English espionage as a subject? The heroine, Jessica James, is based on my own experience as a graduate student… except I did not murder my dissertation advisor. in philosophy… In some ways, my first novel is autobiographical. ![]() To make a long story short, I went to college on a fellowship, majored in philosophy, and then went to graduate school on another fellowship and got my Ph.D. He didn’t even have a high school education, but he was a home-grown philosopher. I became interested in philosophy before I even knew what it was through conversations with my paternal grandfather. It made for some interesting conversations at the poker table over Canadian Rye. My paternal grandfather was a logger and my maternal grandfather was a forest ranger. And my father was a logger, working for my grandfather until he eventually became a civil engineer after having four kids. ![]() I would love to write the history of my family in the Northwest, which involves murders, betrayals, blood and sweat, and a love and respect for the land.
